Sand - Sandustry Wiki

Learn where Sand comes from in Sandustry, how it combines with Water to create Wet Sand, and how it starts the early Gold production chain.

Overview

Sand is a basic Solid material used as the starting point of Sandustry’s early production chain. Destroying Dirt drops Sand; bringing that Sand into contact with Water creates Wet Sand for processing by a Shaker.

This page reflects the official Wiki and current Early Access gameplay evidence checked on August 17, 2026. It does not include Demo-only acquisition rules, fixed collection rates, or claims about an optimal mining route.

How to Obtain

Destroy Dirt to release Sand, then collect the loose material for processing. Current Early Access gameplay also shows this as an opening activity: the player digs soft terrain, picks up Sand, and carries it to Water.

The checked sources do not establish a best map location, fastest digging route, fixed collection speed, or maximum Sand yield.

How It Works

Stage Verified Behavior
Source Destroying Dirt drops Sand.
Input A Sand pixel comes into contact with a Water pixel.
Conversion The Sand and Water pixels are replaced with two Wet Sand pixels.
Next stage Wet Sand is placed on a Shaker for processing.

The verified material reaction is:

1 Sand + 1 Water → 2 Wet Sand

This reaction describes what happens to the pixels when they touch. It does not define a fixed factory throughput, machine ratio, or best layout.

Used For

  • Wet Sand production: Sand combines with Water to create Wet Sand.
  • Shaker processing chain: Wet Sand becomes the input for a Shaker, which produces Residue and can also produce Gold.
  • Early Research progression: Gold from the downstream chain can be collected for Research. Sand itself does not enter Collector tiles directly.
  • Shaker — processes Wet Sand created from Sand and Water.
  • Collector — receives downstream Gold so that it counts toward Research; it does not process Sand directly.
  • Water — reacts with Sand to create Wet Sand.
  • Wet Sand — the direct result of the Sand-and-Water reaction.
  • Gold — a possible downstream output from Shaker processing.
  • Residue — the regular byproduct of Shaker processing.

Tips and Notes

  • Sand must touch Water before it becomes valid Wet Sand input for a Shaker.
  • If dry Sand reaches the processing area, check whether it actually contacted Water before changing the Shaker setup.
  • Sand begins the early production chain, but the checked sources do not establish a best collection route or optimal factory design.
  • The exact pixel reaction does not guarantee a fixed Gold output because Gold production occurs later at the Shaker stage.

FAQ

How do you get Sand in Sandustry?

Destroy Dirt to release Sand, then collect the loose material. The official Wiki identifies Dirt as the source of Sand.

What is Sand used for?

Sand is used to create Wet Sand. Wet Sand then enters the Shaker processing chain that produces Residue and can also produce Gold.

How do you turn Sand into Wet Sand?

Bring a Sand pixel into contact with a Water pixel. The official Sand and Water pages state that both pixels are replaced with two Wet Sand pixels.

Does Sand go directly into a Shaker?

No. Sand first needs to contact Water and become Wet Sand. The Shaker processes Wet Sand, not dry Sand.

Is there a best place to collect Sand?

The checked sources do not establish a universal best location or route. They verify that destroying Dirt releases Sand.
